The Key Peninsula Cooperative Preschool is a parent/child participation program offered through its affiliation with Bates Technical College in Tacoma. This program is designed to enable parents and young children to learn together.
At the same time as they enroll their children in the cooperative preschool, parents enroll in a continuing education program offered by Bates Technical College. To earn college credit, parents assist in the classroom on a rotating basis as part of the laboratory experience. As part of the lecture requirement, they attend monthly parent education opportunities presented by the co-op preschool, Bates, or a community agency. Parents also conduct the non-profit business of the preschool.
Child Studies Instructors from Bates provide the cooperative preschools with teacher and leadership training, parenting education seminars, technical assistance, information and support. One Child Studies Instructor is assigned to each cooperative preschool.
Other benefits of Bates affiliation include access to affordable insurance for the co-op, trainings for the board and the teachers, access to the Resource Center, twice monthly parent education and early childhood education opportunities, and advertisements in Bates promotional materials.
